As director of communications and media relations, Chris works to tell the story of Smarter Balanced and how the assessment system helps to improve teaching and learning in schools across member states. Prior to joining Smarter Balanced, Chris worked for Partnership for Learning in Seattle, where he led the Ready Washington coalition, which builds awareness, understanding and support for college and career ready learning standards and assessments. Before that, he worked five years at Washington’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction as assessment communications manager, and also handled media relations in the early days of Smarter Balanced.
Prior to his career in education communications, Chris worked as a daily newspaper reporter and editor for 20 years. As a longtime sports writer, he covered the NFL for many years. He also served as a military affairs reporter, covering stories and conflicts around the nation and world. Chris lives in the Seattle area with his wife and four kids. He loves to play to tennis and soccer. He earned his degree in Communications/Journalism from the University of Oregon.Send Chris a Message
